LED ZEPPELIN : PAGE PLANT & JONES

In celebration of the imminent reunion of Messrs Page, Plant & Jones, MOJO magazine have compiled an exclusive 'HEAVY NUGGETS' cover mount CD, consisting of 15 choice cuts from 1968-1973.

Featured tracks include THE MOVE's 'Don't Make My Baby Blue' (taken from the album 'Shazam') & PROCOL HARUM's 'Long Gone Geek' (taken from their 'Secrets Of The Hive' 'Best Of' anthology).

Whilst musing on Page & Jones news, we have unearthed multitrack tapes of sessions recorded in March 1966, which feature then session men Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones, that had been hidden deep in the FLY vault.

The sessions, for producer Denny Cordell, were some of the earliest recordings to be made for New Breed Productions, Denny and David Platz's production company. These sessions were for New Breed's new signing BEVERLEY (KUTNER), better known a few years later as Beverley Martyn. The key track from the sessions was a charged interpretation of the Randy Newman song 'Happy New Year', with spirited contributions from Page, Jones & pianist Nicky Hopkins.

'Happy New Year' became New Breed Productions first commercial release as well as being the inaugural release on DECCA's DERAM label.

It will make it's debut appearance on compact disc in February 2008 on a special CD Ace Records are compiling, themed around the songs of Randy Newman.

Other tracks from these Beverley / Page / Jones / Hopkins sessions include original versions of Beverley's own songs that appeared a few years later in re-recorded form on John & Beverley Martyn's classic album 'Stormbringer'. A total of nine tracks were recorded, more news of which will be posted soon.

40th Anniversary Series

In association with award winning Salvo Records, Fly Records is proud to commence its 40th Anniversary Series.

40th Anniversary of What?

As mentioned in the 'Fly Past' section, our production companies began in the mid-Sixties, so from here on in we'll be issuing releases to celebrate 40th Anniversaries for :

  • The Move forming (1966)

  • The Move's debut single 'Night Of Fear' charting (1967)

  • Procol Harum's 40 years (1967)

  • 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' (1967), the nations' favourite and most played Pop record of all time (Radio 2 'Sold On Song' & PPL broadcast analysis)

  • Flowers In The Rain' (1967) being the first record played on Radio One, a Number 2 hit single in the UK, and, unintentionally, the first Pop charity record ever, when Prime Minister Harold Wilson sued them and won their royalties from the A and B side.... enforced to this day.

  • The Move Debut album release (1968)

  • Procol Harum Debut album release (1968)

and so on.... it won't be an exact science, but will underpin the reappraisal and revaluing of our catalogue, artists, producers and production companies.

See our MUSIC section for full release details.

Email SIGN UP users will have access to a jukebox with a selection of tracks from a forthcoming release, prior to release, with a few surprises thrown in.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS A 40th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCT ?

All product should be stickered '40th Anniversary Series', but any product that does not carry the Salvo & Fly logos, is either unlicensed, out of date stock or counterfeit.

re Procol Harum releases : these will be labelled '40 Years'.

REPERTOIRE RECORDS :

We have been asked by several fan sites about recordings / albums of ours still appearing on this label. Our licensing deal with this company ended in 2005. They have no authority or right to sell our recordings any longer. Ourselves and other artists not aligned to us are pursuing an end to this situation through legal channels.

HASN'T THIS ALL BEEN DONE TIME & TIME AGAIN OVER THE YEARS.... WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO HEAR ?

Over the decades original tapes have either been stored in various locations or lost, stolen, misplaced, relocated and occasionally returned. Thankfully very few have been 'wiped' or have deteriorated to dust.

A number of tapes had been accessed in the mid-nineties, when our catalogue was licensed to Westside/Demon to handle the 30th Anniversary releases. Due to restraints of time and manpower the material uncovered proved less exhaustive than anticipated. Subsequent licensed products to Europe and Japan extracted recordings from this period of recovery. However, only Procol Harum's catalogue was significantly re-issued for the 30th Anniversary, although the sequencing of releases was constrained by the release dates and tapes made available to the compilers.

Since 2000 more resources have been allocated for the relocating and retrieving of further tapes from various locations. This process is still ongoing.

Examination of boxes of reels has revealed a reasonable treasure trove of session tapes for popular hits, mixes of unreleased tracks, and song demos originally intended for artists to cover. They have also revealed many tape boxes noting one thing, only for the enclosed reel of tape within it to play a totally unrelated, different tune. Not forgetting that even when recovered, and returned to 'safe' storage, there is no guarantee anything will avoid being misplaced... again.

For anyone interested in an overview of the processes involved in catalogue re-issues, keep a look out for our informative report which will be posted later this year.

ADDED VALUE :

Experts and archivists for the artists concerned, and where possible the artists themselves, have been given full access to enable as exhaustive and authoritative a stamp on the planned releases as can be accomplished.

Ongoing research to locate as many key people involved in these recordings, releases and artists is being undertaken and we have been able to contact quite a few people who have all been very forthcoming with their knowledge, recollections and support. A forthcoming feature of the Fly Past section will be to highlight these key individuals in more detail. Some have gone on to became legends and household names, others have moved into other industries over the decades. But all of them have fascinating first hand accounts of what happened and the real stories behind frequently (mis)quoted myths.

With complete re-mastering for all recordings and wherever applicable, creating multi-tracks from original session tapes (backing tracks and overdubs previously 'bounced' over) that allow for new mixes - but retaining the original sonic splendour of the recordings, these recordings are sounding like never before... or at least not since their original studio playback airing.

Notable and appropriate music writers have been enlisted to work with archivists to ensure the most comprehensive and revealing stories of these artists and our releases can be finally told.

Where possible archive photographs and memorabilia complete the process and special packaging reinforces the value that is being restored to our releases. Invaluable archive materials have been accessed by our association with key archivists for the artists.

PRIVATE ACCESS ONLY :

Buyers of Fly-Salvo CDs who pop their CD into a computer will find an inobtrusive html file on the disc (or on disc 1 if a multi CD set) which when clicked leads to a protected on-line page.

The page will contain :
- email sign up for updates to the hidden area
- where applicable unedited full sleeve-notes which would not fit on the CD releases
- bonus content that appertains to that release only, across any relevant media format. There will always be some additional audio material that will be unavailable for downloading anywhere else.

More importantly, as some session tapes for these releases are still missing, we plan to prepare audio that would have been included on the CD album had it been available at the time of release.

This is to reward buyers - some of whom will have earlier versions of these releases - making our 40th Anniversary Series as definitive as possible.

There is no additional cost for this exclusive bonus material but we will be recommending satisfied fans consider making a direct donation to a choice of charities should they feel the added materials warrant such action. We will add direct links to recommended charities, some authorised by artists, with recommended donation amounts.

THE EXCEPTION TO THIS IS PROCOL HARUM's 'Secrets Of the Hive' ..

...there are no further secrets from this particular hive, but a few surprises are forthcoming. Procol fans should investigate the 40 Year re-issue of the 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' where a non-album, previously MBW recording of 'Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone)' resides. It is frankly AWESOME... even if we say so ourselves.
Did someone say "A Robe Of..." ... more soon.

But isn't this all what every label says to get fans to re-mortgage their homes to buy this music yet again ?

Maybe, but wherever and whenever possible we will present streamed excerpts from releases for your instant listening assessment (bandwidth and compression of audio etc not withstanding) and links to official 'fan' sites who will no doubt give a spin-free report on our releases.

Why doesn't this site have band member biographies and other information ?

Our site focusses solely on whatever we were involved in regarding artists whose recordings we own. In most cases these artists have their own, or affilated sites that are a treasure trove of content about the artists and the minutae of their lives. We strongly recommend you take some time to aquaint yourself with their sites. Where relevant we will have direct links to them. In some cases artist sites will have exclusive access to some releases.

eg themoveonline.com is being relaunched this month and will be the ONLY PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE where you can buy red vinyl editions of The Move's 'Flowers In The Rain' single that were limited to 100 pressings and made solely for VIP distribution.
